Barra de Potosí and Surrounding Area
- O.Ridley's Tortuga Bar - during the high season (roughly November through March) the bar is open 3-5 evenings per week. The bar hosts live music events, game & trivia nights, movies, and sports on the TV. Occasionally there are classes like ceramics and cooking as well.
- Beachfront & Lagoon-side Restaurants - there are about 20 beachfront restaurants that are open daily till around sunset. These have a seafood-centric menu, but do have some other options.
- Village restaurants - these are lower priced, menu of the day type places. Most have a meal of the day along with a regular menu of typical Mexican fare. Some of these are open during the day, and some are open at just at night.
- Shopping - there are a number of small tiendas where you can purchase food staples, snacks and drinks. In addition, there are places to buy seafood, chicken, fruit & veggies, & tortillas. There is also a pharmacy with doctor. Six days per week, Don Patricio (aka Don Bolillo) comes around on his bicycle selling bolillos (fresh rolls) in the morning and pastries in the afternoon.
- El Nido Community Center is only a few doors down the street. Here you will find yoga instruction five days per week, arts and crafts classes, and occasionally fundraiser events. The view from the open 3rd floor veranda is spectacular.
- Surfing - just a block away is a surf shop where you can rent a board and/or sign up for lessons.
- Fishing - we have several captains that will take you out on a small fishing boat. These boats typically take 4-6 guests at a time.
- If fishing's not your thing, but you still want to head out on the ocean, you can arrange with the same captain for a Boat Trip to see los morros (the big off shore rock formation) up close, go snorkeling, etc.
- Lagoon tours - you can rent a kayak or paddle board to explore our lagoon on your own, or you can take a guided tour. We have a local bi-lingual bird expert (we have world-class birding here) who does guided kayak tours and boat tours where all you have to do is watch and learn – no paddling!
- Whale watching tours - working with Whales of Guerrero, a number of our captains are certified whale watch captains who can tell you all about the creatures you are seeing while keeping them safe.
- Cooking classes - a group of locals have organized cooking classes that are taught in their homes. It is a great way to learn about the local living, local cuisine, and best of all eat a great meal!
- Hiking tours - learn about our local flora and fauna while hiking over to the next beach down the coast, Playa Tortuga, a pristine beach with no houses, business, and virtually no people.
- Sea Turtle Conservation Center - daily at sunset (when there are hatchlings), you can participate in a baby turtle release at Campamento Tortuguero Ayotlcalli. An experience that is not to be missed. It literally has changed the path of our lives.
- El Refugio de Barra de Potosi is a short drive or ride on the pasajero. The animal residents there have been injured or abandoned and nursed back to health by the staff. You will see interesting animals along with a reconstructed whale skeleton that was washed up nearby.
